The Sahara opens
On October 7, the Sahara Hotel and Casino, also called ''The Jewel of the Desert'', opens.
This resort, whose theme is the North African desert, offers 240 rooms, and a dining room with 500 seats.

Opening of the Sands
On December 15, a new 2000 room Hotel and Casino appears on the Strip. the Sands.
Jack Entratter is the first Entertainment Director. He will bring to the Sands a number of stars, among which Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

Queen Elizabeth II
On February 5, King George VI dies. He has reigned 16 years, and in his last years he was suffering of lung cancer and heart disease.
The 25-year old princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary is proclaimed the Queen of the United Kingdom. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II will take place next year.

The H-bomb
On November 1, the first hydrogen bomb detonates above an atoll in the Marshall Islands. The power of this bomb is 10 Megatons, namely 500 times the Hiroshima bomb.
While an atomic bomb (A-bomb) is based on the fission of uranium nuclei, the hydrogen bomb (H-bomb) takes its energy from the fusion of hydrogen into helium.
On 1953, the first Soviet H-bomb will explode, soon followed by a series of American test explosions in the atoll of Bikini.

Batista's dictatorship
Fulgencio Batista y Zaldivar establishes a cruel dictatorship in Cuba, that will last till until 1959, when Fidel Castro will take the power.

Havana will also become famous for its casinos, frequented by thousands of professional gamblers, as well as of prostitutes.

he death of Evita
Eva Peron, the second wife of the Argentine dictator Juan Peron, dies of cancer at the age of 33.
Evita (as she was better known) was very popular, also among the poorest people. Among others, she obtained the vote for women in Argentina.
With the death of Evita, Peron's dictatorship will start to decline. In spite of his strong propaganda and repression, he will be eventually forced to leave in 1955.
