The Binion's Horseshoe
Benny Binions opens the Horseshoe Hotel and Casino.
The Horseshoe will soon become famous for hosting the Casino with the highest table limits in town.

Opening of the Nevada Test Site
On January 1, 75 miles northwest of Las Vegas, the Atomic Energy Commission begins the construction of its Nevada Test.
The first atomic bomb detonates on January 27, followed by a few others in the next 10 days.

Sinatra in Las Vegas
On September 4, Frank Sinatra makes his showroom debut in Las Vegas, singing in the Crystal Room, at the Desert Inn.
Only a few months before, newspapers have reported of his attempted suicide, with an overdose of sleeping pills.

Inauguration of the Las Vegas Convention Center
The Las Vegas Convention Center, with its gigantic Auditorium of futuristic design, is inaugurated hosting the First World Congress of Flight.
With the opening of the Convention Center, Las Vegas realizes the economic importance of hosting conventions.

Victims of the Cold War witch-hunt?
Ethel and Julius Rosenberg are declared guilty of having passed to U.S.S.R. important U.S. military secrets, on the production of nuclear weapons.
They have been involved by David Greenglass, Ethel's brother, who was working as a machinist at the Los Alamos laboratory at the time of the Manhattan Project.
Although they have always declared themselves innocent, they will be sentenced to death.

German reparations for the Holocaust
The states of Israel and West Germany begin a secret negotiation to define the compensation for the Holocaust.
The official negotiations will start next year, in the Dutch town of Wassenar. Israel will ask for $1 billion, plus $500 million for the Jewish spread over the world.
Against the negotiation were not only some Germans, but also some Jewish people that do not accept to have any contact with Germany.

Churchill to the head of UK
Almost at the age of 80, Winston Churchill becomes first minister of Great Britain. Churchill became famous during the Second World War.
As a prime minister, his activity is mostly focused on the foreign affairs. He works to make UK closer to the United States and to the rest of Europe.

Electronic computers are becoming more and more powerful, outclassing the mechanical devices.
The Eckert-Mauchly Computing Corporation develops the UNIVAC (for Universal Automatic Computer), the fastest computer built so far.
